Visit Yap

The Yap region in the Federated States of Micronesia is a group of four tropical islands that make up one of the four states that comprise this Pacific nation. It has a strong traditional and cultural identity, with a distinct language, crafts and cuisine. Tourists come to Yap to enjoy its beautiful beaches, stunning scenery and historic sites.

Some must-see places include the ancient stone money quarries on the island of Lumoal which are estimated to be 350 years old, as well as Pale Ni'oumweli waterfall which is surrounded by lush vegetation and limestone formations. Yap is also home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites - the Lelu Ruins with its temples built in honour of ancient kings and Liduduhniap Marine Park where you can dive among coral reefs teeming with tropical fish.

An interesting historical fact about Yap is that it was an important stop in ancient trading routes between East Asia & Western Oceania. The currency used was called 'rai' made from large round stones carved into circles or discs - some weighing up to 4 tons! These coins are still used today for ceremonial occasions such as wedding dowries or payment for goods from other countries who recognize their value.
