Helsinki Cathedral is a spectacular landmark located in the heart of Helsinki, Finland. The iconic Greek-style white building with its distinctive green domes stands majestically at the end of Senate Square with an impressive display of both history and culture. It was originally built between 1830 and 1852 for Tsar Alexander I of Russia to commemorate his Grand Duchy’s conquest over Sweden. Today, the cathedral serves as a Lutheran Church open to visitors who wish to explore this gorgeous piece of architecture.
The church’s interior is just as remarkable as its exterior featuring neoclassical design elements including a marble floor and gold-plated columns throughout. Its most impressive feature however, is the bronze altar designed by Carl Ludvig Engel which dates back to 1828. Be sure to admire this incredible detail while you’re there! In addition, don’t miss out on seeing one of the largest chandeliers in all Scandinavia, known simply as ‘the Great Chandelier’.
