Chateauroux is a city situated in the Indre department of central France. Part of the historical province of Berry, its origins date back to Roman times when it was a Gallo-Roman settlement known as "Castrum Auriense". It is an attractive city with its bustling market town atmosphere, many shops and cafes, and impressive architecture. The old part of Chateauroux is packed with interesting sites such as Saint-Gildas Church, Notre Dame Cathedral and the Place de la Liberte.
Visitors can explore the countryside around Chateauroux via bicycle or foot along many marked trails or take full advantage of other outdoor activities such as fishing, boating and golfing at nearby sites.
