The Canal du Midi is a picturesque canal located in the charming city of Toulouse, France. Built between 1667 and 1681, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. This impressive construction stretches 250km from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean Sea and offers stunning views of the French countryside. Along its route there are various locks, bridges and aqueducts that provide interesting sights for curious visitors.

The most popular spot along the Canal du Midi is undoubtedly Fonseranes Locks, located near Beziers. It consists of an impressive staircase with eight locks which allow boats to ascend 25 metres! Tourists can also find many other attractions such as La Malpas Tunnel and Agde Aqueduct to explore while visiting this remarkable waterway.

Plan your visit

  1. Be sure to bring your own water and snacks, as there may not be any available for purchase at the canal.
  2. Wear comfortable shoes that are fit for walking or biking along the towpaths of Canal du Midi.
  3. Get to know the local area by taking a guided tour or visiting a nearby museum to learn more about its history and culture.
  4. Take advantage of all of the outdoor activities in Canal du Midi such as kayaking, canoeing, fishing, and swimming in its calm waters!
  5. Make sure you have plenty of souvenirs for your friends and family back home - there are lots of artisan shops along with way selling traditional French treats such as foie gras!
