Visit Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni

Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni is a commune in French Guiana, located on the Maroni River near the border with Suriname. It is the largest city in French Guiana, and was once an important penal colony. The town centre has many historic buildings, including some of the old prison buildings now used as a museum.

The area around Saint-Laurent is home to many species of birds and animals, and can be explored by boat or kayak. There are also several beaches such as Grand Sable that offer swimming and sunbathing opportunities. Other attractions include nearby Devil's Island where prisoners were held during colonial times, hiking trails throughout the forest, and shops selling local handicrafts.

An interesting historical fact about Saint-Laurent is that it was home to several thousand Jewish refugees who fled Nazi Germany during World War II. They were given refuge at nearby Kourou before eventually being allowed to stay permanently in France after the war ended. Today there is still a small Jewish community living in Saint-Laurent which maintains its heritage through cultural events such as an annual Passover dinner for all residents to celebrate their shared history.
