The Ogooue-Maritime region of Gabon is situated on the Atlantic Coast and is known for its stunningly beautiful beaches, lagoons, and diverse wildlife. Along the coastline you can find some of the best fishing spots in all of Africa, along with excellent surfing opportunities. The area also offers a wealth of cultural heritage sites to explore, such as Fort de France on Ile de Muni, which was built by French colonialists in 1801.
For nature lovers there are plenty of places to visit including Akanda National Park, where you can observe estuarine crocodiles and manatees at close range. Pointe Denis is also a must-see for its white sand beaches and warm turquoise waters that are ideal for swimming, sunbathing or simply relaxing.
Historically speaking, Ogooue-Maritime was one of the first regions settled by Europeans in Gabon during the late 19th century when Britain leased part of the area from France. This agreement allowed Britain to build Libreville (now the capital) as a free port for trade between Europe and Africa.
