Imereti is a region in western Georgia that is filled with lush greenery, rolling hills and ancient historical sites. It is known for its numerous churches, monasteries, castles and fortresses from the medieval period. The Imeretian capital of Kutaisi is one of the oldest cities in the country and boasts some fascinating architecture from various periods.

The Bagrati Cathedral in Kutaisi is a must-visit destination. This 11th century cathedral has been recently renovated and offers stunning views of the city below. Another popular sightseeing spot in Imereti is the Promete Monastery which was built by King David IV during his campaign to restore Christianity to Georgia. An interesting historical fact about Imereti is that it was once ruled by Alexander II of Racha-Lechkhumi who signed an edict declaring Kutaisi as one of five capitals in 1810 - something unheard of at that time!
