Visit Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti


Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti (also known as Upper Svaneti or Samtskhe-Javakheti) is an administrative region in north-western Georgia. It is bounded by the regions of Abkhazia and Imereti to the east, Racha to the south, and by Samegrelo to the west. Its capital is Zugdidi.

This beautiful mountain region offers a variety of tourist attractions with natural beauty, historical monuments and diverse cultures. Here you can enjoy trekking activities around some of Georgia's highest mountains such as Mount Ushba and Mount Tetnuldi, while visiting traditional remote villages like Mestia; where visitors get a glimpse into traditional Georgian life and festivities. The area has also many religious sites such as Jvari Church in Mestia , Vardzia cave monastery complex or Gelati Monastery; UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2010.

A fact worth mentioning about Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti is that it was home to several ancient Georgian dynasties including Dadiani dynasty who were once powerful rulers in western Georgia until the 19th century when they lost their power upon Russian annexation of Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti Province in 1858.
