The island of Crete is a beautiful region of Greece, located in the southeastern part of the country. It's known for its stunning beaches, rugged mountains, and fascinating archaeological sites.

One of Crete's most popular tourist attractions is the ancient city of Knossos. It was once an important Minoan settlement and is believed to have been the home to King Minos - one of Greek mythology's most legendary rulers. Visitors can explore the ruins, which include a palace complex with frescoes, throne rooms and courtyards.

Other must-visit tourist spots on Crete include Samaria Gorge - a dramatic ravine located on the western side of the island - as well as Elafonisi lagoon - a stunning beach surrounded by pink sand dunes and crystal clear waters.

Crete has long been at the heart of European history: it was here that Zeus was born, according to legend; around 2000BC it became one of Europe's first advanced civilizations; and during World War II it acted as a major battleground between Allied forces and Germany's Nazi occupation force.
