Visit Mount Athos

Mount Athos is an autonomous region in the north-eastern part of Greece, located on the peninsula of Chalkidiki. It is home to twenty Eastern Orthodox monasteries and thousands of monks. Visitors are allowed access to the region but only men are able to enter, as it has been a male-only area since 1060 AD.

The region is teeming with historical sites and breathtaking landscapes. One must-see spot is Karpathos hilltop monastery that dates back to 10th century, offering stunning views over the Aegean Sea; another must visit place is Vatopaidi Monastery's library for its priceless collection of books and manuscripts dating back centuries ago.

An interesting tidbit about Mount Athos' history: it was declared as an independent state by King Othon I in 1833 when he granted them a royal charter; however this declaration was not acknowledged by many countries until 1912.
