Visit Kitaa (West Greenland)

Kitaa is the westernmost province in Greenland. Its unique geography offers stunning views of the Greenland Ice Sheet, fjords and mountains. The capital city of Nuuk is the cultural hub of Kitaa and home to many historic attractions including the Katuaq cultural center and Nuuk Cathedral, both located in old-town Nuuk.

Kitaa's rugged landscapes are ideal for outdoor activities like kayaking, fishing, hunting and skiing which can be done around the region's various national parks such as Qeqertarsuaq National Park or Knud Rasmussen Land National Park. Other interesting places to visit include Ilulissat Icefjord with its iconic icebergs floating in Disko Bay and Ilulissat Museum which showcases a collection of ancient artifacts from local cultures.

The history of Kitaa dates back thousands of years with archaeological evidence found at sites across the province that suggest human habitation since 3000 BCE or earlier. In modern times, Kitaa has been an important part of Danish colonial history as it was permanently occupied by Denmark in 1728 - making it one off only two provinces in Greenland to remain under Danish rule until 1953 when it was declared an autonomous territory within Denmark's kingdom.
