Baja Verapaz is a department located in the north-center of Guatemala. It is bordered by El Progreso to the west, Alta Verapaz to the east, and Zacapa and Izabal to the south. The population of Baja Verapaz consists mainly of Mestizo and Maya peoples, who speak Q'eqchi' as their primary language.

The region is known for its lush green hillsides, rivers and forests that are home to a wide variety of birds and plants. Visitors can explore some of these natural wonders at places such as Las Victorias National Park or Semuc Champey Natural Monument. The area also has many historical sites including Coban Cathedral which was built in 1545 and it said to be where St Francis Xavier gave his first Mass in Guatemala during his visit in 1547.
