Izabal is a department of eastern Guatemala located on the Caribbean coast. It is an area of lush tropical rainforest, beautiful beaches, and rich Mayan culture. It is best known for its impressive Lake Izabal, the largest in Central America. Tourists can enjoy a variety of activities like swimming, fishing, boating and exploring the jungle. For some unique cultural experiences, visitors can explore the town of El Estor to learn about traditional Guatemalan food or visit the ancient Mayan ruins at Quirigua National Park.

Izabal has a rich history as well. In 1525 it was part of Pedro de Alvarado's expedition that sought to conquer what is now Guatemala from the Mayans who had ruled for centuries prior. Today Izabal remains heavily influenced by its Maya heritage with many speaking one of their languages as their first language alongside Spanish.
