The Sacatepequez region of Guatemala is located just southwest of Guatemala City and is known for its vibrant culture, colonial-era architecture and stunning scenery. This culturally rich area is home to several indigenous Kaqchikel Maya communities and the beautiful colonial cities of Antigua, San Juan del Obispo, Santa Maria de Jesus and San Miguel Duenas. Tourists visiting Sacatepequez can explore the ruins of a 16th century monastery at San Miguel Duenas or visit one of the many charming artisan markets in Antigua.

The area holds an important place in Guatemalan history as it was here that General Justo Rufino Barrios declared the separation Act between Central America and Mexico on October 20th, 1821. This event marked an important step towards full independence from Spanish rule in Guatemala.
