Totonicapan is a municipality located in the western highlands of Guatemala. It offers visitors a unique blend of natural beauty, culture and history. The area is known for its traditional markets, colorful textiles, and vivid festivals. Totonicapan is home to several archaeological sites including El Tintal, one of the most important pre-Hispanic cities.
Tourists shouldn't miss visiting Santo Domingo del Cerro and La Piedra Parada located on the outskirts of Totonicapan. These impressive Mayan ruins have been preserved since ancient times and offer visitors breathtaking views over Lake Atitlan. Another popular attraction is El Mirador de los Altos de San Antonio, where you can enjoy sweeping views of the city from atop a hilltop fortress built in 1651 by local indigenous communities to protect themselves against Spanish invaders.
The city also has an interesting historical fact; during colonial times it was part of an enclave known as "the republic within a republic" because it remained independent from Spanish rule until 1854 when it was finally conquered by governmental forces.
