Visit Bolama/Bijagós

The Bolama/Bijagos region of Guinea Bissau is an archipelago of more than 88 islands, surrounded by beautiful white sandy beaches and mangrove creeks. This area has seen many kingdoms come and go throughout its history, including the kingdom of Bijagos, which was established in the 16th century.

The environment here is incredibly diverse and remote, making it a great spot for ecotourism activities like fishing, birdwatching, canoeing and kayaking. Nature lovers should head to Rubane Island to observe local wildlife or explore its breathtaking landscapes while enjoying beachside camping. Visitors can also experience traditional life on Bubaque Island where locals hold festivals to honor their ancestors every year.

One historical site that must be visited is Bolama Fortress that holds some colonial era buildings from when the Portuguese were in power in this area. It stands as a testament to all the different rulers who passed through this province throughout time and offers visitors a chance to experience a piece of its storied past up close.
