Visit Cacheu

Cacheu is a small town in the African nation of Guinea-Bissau, located near the Atlantic Ocean on the Cacheu River. It was founded by Portuguese settlers in 1588 and is an integral part of Guinea-Bissau's history. Its stunning beaches make it a popular destination for tourists, while its mangrove forests are home to unique wildlife such as fennec foxes and hyenas.

In Cacheu, visitors can explore the historic architecture of its old fortifications or visit one of its many museums dedicated to exploring its rich cultural heritage. Other attractions include visiting its bustling marketplaces full of vibrant colors and sounds or taking a boat ride along the river to experience the beauty of nature that surrounds it.

One interesting historical fact about Cacheu is that during Portugal's colonial administration in Africa, it was known as "Porto Pidjiguiti". This name is derived from a slave rebellion which occurred here in 1842 when slaves aboard a Portuguese ship refused to be sold into slavery and streamed ashore at Porto Pidjiguiti before being recaptured by their captors.
