Visit Leste Province

The Leste Province of Guinea-Bissau is a vibrant, diverse region located in the western part of the country. The province is dominated by lush green vegetation and many traditional villages. It is known for its stunning sand beaches, fishing villages and pristine inland water bodies such as Lake Tombali.

Two of the most popular tourist attractions in this area are Bafata City and Canhabaque Island. Bafata City is a former Portuguese trading post known for its colonial architecture, churches and colorful markets. Canhabaque Island provides great opportunities for bird watching, snorkeling and fishing due to its rich coral reefs.

From a historical perspective, the Leste Province was home to some of Guinea-Bissau's oldest communities with more than 500 years of history recorded in oral tradition alone. These ancient communities were united during colonization under one kingdom called Fula which stretched across all present day provinces until independence was declared in 1974.
