The Upper Demerara-Berbice region of Guyana is located in the north of the country and is home to some of its most picturesque natural beauty. The area is known for its abundant wildlife, lush rainforests and breathtaking waterfalls. Popular tourist destinations include Kaieteur Falls, one of the world's highest single drop waterfalls, as well as Aripero Beach where visitors can take in panoramic views from high cliffs overlooking the river. Other attractions include the Amaila Falls hydroelectric power plant which is expected to become Guyana's main source of electricity in 2021, and Rupununi Savannah which provides an opportunity to explore more remote areas with guided tours offered by local villagers. An interesting historical fact about Upper Demerara-Berbice is that it was formerly part of British Guiana until 1966 when it was ceded to Guyana upon independence from England.
