Visit Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo

The Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo is a region of Guyana located in the south-west of the country. It is a sparsely populated area, primarily made up of pristine jungle and savannah. It is known for its unique and diverse wildlife, including rare species such as the giant anteater.

The area offers a variety of activities for tourists ranging from hiking, birdwatching, fishing and canoeing to visiting local Amerindian communities. Two major attractions are the Iwokrama Rainforest Reserve and Orinduik Falls. The Iwokrama Rainforest Reserve has some of the most biodiverse forests in South America with over 400 species of birds alone; while Orinduik Falls offers breathtaking views overlooking two countries - Guyana and Brazil - from atop its 100 foot drop!

In addition to its abundant natural beauty, Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo boasts interesting cultural sites such as Lethem Town which was once home to an extinct pre-Columbian civilization called Shetebo people. This area was also once part of British Guiana before it became independent in 1966 as Guyana.
