Visit Copán Department
Copan is located in the western part of Honduras, and is home to some of the most beautiful and interesting tourist destinations. The department borders Guatemala to the west, and its capital city, Santa Rosa de Copan, is known for its colonial architecture. Visitors to Copan can explore a variety of Mayan ruins from pre-Columbian times, including Los Sapos Archaeological Park which has a stunning temple and ziggurat complex. Other attractions include the Hacienda San Lucas Coffee Plantation and Museum or the Cusuco National Park which offers incredible bird watching opportunities.
In addition to its spectacular scenery, Copan Department has an interesting history. It was first inhabited by indigenous people in 1500 BC who lived in small farming villages. In 1537 it became part of the Spanish Empire and was then annexed by Honduras in 1821 after winning independence from Spain. This region played an important role during the Honduran Civil War in 1969, with many battles fought here before peace was restored two years later.
