Visit Baranya County


Baranya County is located in Southwestern Hungary and borders Serbia and Croatia. It has a population of over 400,000 and is known for its variety of geographical features such as vineyards, rolling hills, forests and rivers.

The city of Pecs is the county's largest city and a popular tourist destination. The city has a rich cultural heritage with numerous museums and galleries to explore as well as plenty of shopping opportunities in the pedestrian-friendly downtown area. A visit to the Calvary Hill chapel complex is a must-see for visitors interested in history; it was added to UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in 2000.

Another must-visit location within Baranya County is Siklos Castle, one of the most important European fortresses from the Middle Ages that still stands today. The castle consists of two castles connected by an underground corridor which can be explored along with other interesting parts like chapels, towers and courtyards.

A unique historical event that happened in Baranya County was the Battle of Mohacs in 1526; the Hungarians were defeated by forces from the Ottoman Empire at this battle which marks an important turning point in Hungarian history.
