The Capital Region of Iceland is a diverse and beautiful area encompassing the capital city of Reykjavik, along with six other municipalities. The region is home to breathtaking fjords, mountains and glaciers, as well as a variety of cultural attractions. Tourist hotspots include the iconic Hallgrimskirkja church in Reykjavik's city center, which provides extraordinary views from its rooftop terrace; and Thingvellir National Park - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - where visitors can explore both stunning natural scenery and Icelandic history. In addition to this, there are interesting historical facts abound; for instance, it was in Althingi (the national parliament) at Thingvellir that Icelanders declared their independence from Denmark in 1944.
