The Northeastern Region of Iceland is known for its scenic beauty, natural wonders and rich cultural heritage. This part of the country sits at the edge of the Arctic Circle, overlooking the North Atlantic Ocean and providing a beautiful backdrop to explore all year round. Popular tourist attractions in this area include Thingvellir National Park and Godafoss Waterfall. Thingvellir National Park is home to many historical sites, such as Almannagja gorge which marks the site where Iceland's first parliament was founded more than a thousand years ago. Godafoss Waterfall is a stunning sight due to its wide cascade and is also said to be one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe. There are several other stunningly beautiful waterfalls in this region including Dettifoss which is considered by many to be Europe's most powerful waterfall. Aside from these natural wonders there are also several museums throughout Northeastern Iceland that tell stories about Icelandic history and culture. One interesting historical fact about this region is that it was once home to some of the earliest Viking settlements in Iceland!
