India Gate

The India Gate (formerly known as the All India War Memorial) is a war memorial located astride the Rajpath, on the eastern edge of the “ceremonial axis” of New Delhi, formerly called Kingsway. It stands as a memorial to 70,000 soldiers of the British Indian Army who died in between 1914 and 1921 in the First World War, in France, Flanders, Mesopotamia, Persia, East Africa, Gallipoli and elsewhere in the Near and the Far East, and the third Anglo-Afghan War. 13,300 servicemen’s names, including some soldiers and officers from the United Kingdom, are inscribed on the gate. Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, the gate evokes the architectural style of the triumphal arch such as the Arch of Constantine, in Rome, and is often compared to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, and the Gateway of India in Mumbai.
Plan your visit
- Before visiting India Gate, be sure to dress appropriately. Avoid revealing clothing and wear light fabrics if possible due to the heat in New Delhi.
- Take advantage of the early morning or late evening hours when temperatures are cooler so that you can explore more comfortably without getting too hot!
- Don’t forget to bring your camera as India Gate is a beautiful landmark with amazing views of New Delhi in all directions!
- Be mindful of pickpockets or opportunistic theft - pay attention to your belongings at all times while you’re here, and try not to carry large amounts of cash around with you while exploring the area around India Gate itself
- Make sure you take time out from sightseeing for breaks - it’s important to stay hydrated and rest up often during times like these when travelling through a new city!
