Himachal Pradesh is a northern Indian state located in the Himalayas. It's known for its scenic mountain towns, snow-covered peaks and temples. Popular tourist attractions include Shimla, one of India's most famous hill stations with British colonial architecture and renowned Kalka-Shimla Railway; Manali, a popular honeymoon destination with its picturesque cottage-style villages; and Dharamshala, home to the Dalai Lama.

Other must visit sites include Chamba - known for its ancient Hindu temples - and Kangra Fort - an 18th century fort nestled in the Kangra valley. For an adrenaline rush, head to Solang Valley for skiing or paragliding in the summer months.

Himachal Pradesh has been inhabited since prehistoric times due to its strategic location between Tibet and Central Asia. The Kingdom of Himachal was founded in 950 CE by Raja Jagat Singh who ruled from his capital at Suketi near present day Hamirpur. Today it is one of India's fastest growing states having gone through rapid economic development over the past few decades while preserving many cultural traditions that make it unique among other parts of India.
