The capital of West Bengal is Kolkata, known as the City of Joy. The city is filled with vibrant markets full of delicious street food and historical buildings like Victoria Memorial Hall. For those looking for a more spiritual experience, there are amazing temples nearby like Dakshineshwar Kali Temple and Belur Math.
Outside Kolkata, visitors can take in the breathtaking beauty of Darjeeling which features the Tiger Hill viewpoint overlooking Mount Everest or explore Sunderbans National Park--the world's largest mangrove forest--where you can spot tigers and other exotic wildlife.
Interestingly enough, West Bengal played an important role in India's independence movement from Britain by becoming one of the first states to declare independence in 1947. It was also home to Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore who wrote India's national anthem 'Jana Gana Mana' as well as many other literary works during his lifetime.
