Visit Kalimantan Timur

Kalimantan Timur is located in the southeast of Indonesia and is the largest province in the country. It is home to many cultures, from Dayak, Javanese to Malay and Chinese. The population consists mainly of indigenous Malays and Dayaks, as well as a large number of immigrants from Java and Sulawesi. One of its main attractions is Tanjung Puting National Park, known for its rich biodiversity and incredible wildlife like orangutans, proboscis monkeys, gibbons and clouded leopards. Another popular destination worth visiting is Berau where you can explore pristine beaches surrounded by tropical rainforest.

For history buffs Kalimantan Timur also offers plenty to explore. During World War II it was part of Dutch East Indies that faced Japanese occupation until Japan's surrender in 1945 after which control was restored to Indonesia. Visitors can still experience a hint of its colonial past at the former Dutch Fort Marlborough located in Balikpapan city which today serves as an important oil-producing area for Indonesia's economy.
