Sulawesi is an Indonesian island located between the Maluku Islands and Kalimantan. It is one of the four Greater Sunda Islands and has a total area of around 70,000 square miles. Sulawesi is known for its stunning landscapes, featuring lush tropical forests, stunning volcanic peaks, stunning coral reefs, and pristine beaches.

Popular tourist attractions in Sulawesi include the Taka Bonerate National Park on Selayar Island, which features a fabulous array of marine life and colorful corals; as well as Lake Poso in Central Sulawesi with its scenic rocky cliffs and hot springs.

An interesting historical fact about Sulawesi is that it was formerly part of the ancient kingdom of Gowa-Tallo which was established in 1512 AD by Sultan Hasanuddin who unified many independent states across South Celebes into one nation. The kingdom flourished for more than three centuries until 1898 when it eventually fell under Dutch rule during their occupation of Indonesia.
