Visit Sumatera Utara

Sumatera Utara is an Indonesian province located in the northern part of Sumatra Island. It has a population of over 11 million people and covers an area of 72,981 square kilometers. The provincial capital is Medan.

The province lies along the Strait of Malacca, and borders Riau Province to the south, West Sumatera to the southwest, Aceh Province to the northwest, and North Sumatera Province to the east. Within its landscape are mountains such as Mount Sibayak and Lake Toba, as well as numerous beaches which attract tourists year round.

Visitors should make sure they include a trip to Bukit Lawang - home of endangered orangutans - in their itinerary when traveling through Sumatera Utara. Another tourist attraction is Samosir Island located within Lake Toba; this island is known for its traditional Batak architecture and culture.

Historically speaking, it was one of thirteen Dutch East Indies provinces used by that colonial power prior to independence in 1945/1949 (depending on time zone). As such it was part of what was once known as Dutch East India Trading Company's trading networks between Asia-Europe-America from 1602 until 1800s when it ceased operations due to colonial subjugation by European powers.
