Visit Sumatra


Sumatra is a province located in western Indonesia. It's the largest island in the country, known for its lush forests and plentiful wildlife. It's home to many different cultures, due to multiple waves of immigration from China, India and other neighbouring countries. Sumatra has something for everyone - amazing beaches, incredible mountains and volcanoes, vibrant cities, and unique wildlife such as tigers and orangutans.

Two places not to miss when visiting Sumatra are Lake Toba and Bukit Lawang. Lake Toba is one of the largest crater lakes in the world with stunning scenery surrounding it. Bukit Lawang is another unique spot which allows tourists to view orangutans up close within their natural habitats around Gunung Leuser National Park.

An interesting historical fact about Sumatra is that it was an important trading post between India and China since ancient times due to its strategic geographical location on the sea routes of Southeast Asia. Many religions were also brought here through trading activities resulting in a diverse cultural landscape across Sumatra today ranging from Hinduism to Buddhism, Islam etc..
