West Papua is a beautiful province of Indonesia located on the western half of the island of New Guinea. It boasts some of the most spectacular scenery and wildlife in all of Southeast Asia, including tropical rainforests, majestic mountains, pristine beaches, and stunning coral reefs teeming with marine life. West Papua has long been home to many indigenous peoples who are known for their distinct culture and hospitality.

Two popular places to visit in West Papua are Lake Sentani and Raja Ampat National Park. Lake Sentani is a large lake near Jayapura City surrounded by small hillside villages that offer stunning views over the lake. Raja Ampat National Park is an archipelago featuring thousands of species of fish, corals, seabirds, and other unique sea creatures that call its waters home. The park also offers amazing snorkeling opportunities as well as guided dive tours around its many islands.

An interesting historical fact about West Papua is that it was once part of Dutch-controlled Indonesia before being annexed by Indonesia in 1963 following UN-mandated negotiations between both countries . This transfer was accompanied by a controversial plebiscite known as the Act of Free Choice which remains widely contested today by both native Papuans and international observers alike.
