West Azarbaijan is a province located in the northwest of Iran. It is bordered by Turkey, Iraq, and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. It is also one of the most diverse provinces of Iran, with many ethnic groups living together including Kurds, Azerbaijanis, and Persians as well as others such as Armenians and Assyrians. The capital city of West Azarbaijan Province is Urmia which houses many attractions such as ancient churches and mosques.

The history of West Azarbaijan can be traced back to ancient times when it was part of Medes kingdom during 7th century BC before becoming part of Achaemenid Empire in 539 BC under Cyrus II rule where he named it Parsagarda Zarbaijan meaning 'Protectorate of Azerbaijan'.
