Visit Kirkuk Governorate


The Kirkuk Governorate is located in northern Iraq and is known for its rich oil fields, as well as its history and culture. It is home to a diverse population of Kurds, Arabs, Turkmen, Assyrians, Chaldeans and Armenians. Tourists looking to explore the region can visit the ancient city of Erbil which lies nearby or take a trip to one of the many archaeological sites such as Arrapha or Al-Hulaylah.

Kirkuk was an important trading hub during the Ottoman rule and a major source of oil production during British occupation. An interesting historical fact about Kirkuk is that it has been populated by numerous civilizations since 3000 BC with some relics still standing today in their original form.
