Visit Maysan Governorate


Maysan Governorate is located in Iraq's southeastern region and borders Iran. It is an agriculturally rich province due to its abundant croplands, orchards and marshes. The capital of Maysan is Amarah, which was historically important as a trading post on the Tigris River.

Tourists visiting Maysan can explore the remains of ancient civilizations that inhabited the area throughout its history including Sumerians, Babylonians and Assyrians. Visitors can also visit Marshlands National Park, where visitors can observe rare species of wildlife such as turtles, birds and fish. Additionally tourists can explore Tell Aswad archaeological site which dates back to 3000 BC representing one of the world's oldest evidence for agricultural practices using irrigation technology at this time period.

Maysan Governorate has seen its fair share of historical events that helped shape modern day Iraq with two major battles occurring there during Saddam Hussein's rule - The Battle for al-Faw Peninsula (1988) during the Iran-Iraq war in 1988; and Operation Desert Storm (1990), when coalition forces invaded Iraq after it invaded Kuwait in 1990.
