The tower has been standing since 1173 and still leans due to foundation problems caused by the ground being too soft on one side. Another thing not to be missed whilst visiting Pisa are the 'Miracle Square' or Campo dei Miracoli as it's known locally - featuring magnificent architecture such as the Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral, the Baptistery and St John's Cathedral all within a few hundred meters of each other! This incredible complex was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 which draws tourists from all over world every year.
