Piazza del Campo, located in Siena, Italy, is one of Europe’s greatest medieval squares. The shell-shaped piazza is renowned for its beauty and architectural integrity, with the surrounding buildings perfectly harmonizing with the square’s layout. It is the social hub of the city, where locals and tourists gather to relax and enjoy the picturesque setting.

While visiting Piazza del Campo, you can’t miss the Palazzo Pubblico, an elegant gothic palace that serves as Siena’s city hall. Another must-see is the Torre del Mangia, a tall bell tower that offers panoramic views of the city. The square also hosts the famous Palio horse race twice a year, a tradition that dates back to the 14th century.

Plan your visit

  1. Visit the square during the day to get the best view of its unique shell-shaped design.
  2. Wear comfortable shoes as you will be walking on cobblestone streets and standing for a long time.
  3. Don’t miss out on Palio di Siena, an annual horse race that takes place twice each year in July and August - it is a popular tourist attraction!
  4. The surrounding buildings are also stunning examples of medieval architecture so make sure to take your time exploring them too!
  5. Be aware of pickpockets as Piazza del Campo can get very crowded especially during peak season or special events like Palio di Siena, so keep an eye on your belongings at all times while visiting this iconic square!
