Point of Interest, Historical full day

The Canal Grande, or Grand Canal, is the major water-traffic corridor sweeping through the heart of Venice. This iconic waterway, shaped like a reverse ’S’, is lined with stunning buildings that date back from the 13th to the 18th century, demonstrating the wealth and artistry of the city’s golden age. The canal is approximately 3.8 km long, 30-90m wide, with an average depth of five meters.

A must-see attraction while visiting the Canal Grande is the Rialto Bridge, the oldest and most famous bridge spanning the canal. Another notable sight is the majestic Ca’ d’Oro, a 15th-century palace that is now a gallery showcasing Renaissance art. A gondola ride or a vaporetto trip down the Canal Grande offers a unique perspective of these historic landmarks and the city’s architectural grandeur.

Plan your visit

  1. Take a gondola ride along the Canal Grande. This is one of the best ways to experience Venice and its many canals!
  2. Visit some of the famous landmarks along the waterway, such as St Mark’s Basilica, The Rialto Bridge and Doge’s Palace.
  3. Bring your camera to capture stunning pictures of this beautiful cityscape from a unique perspective.
  4. Be sure to check times for high tide as parts of the canal may be inaccessible during these periods due to flooding risks in Venice’s historic core area around Piazza San Marco and Rialto bridge areas near Accademia/Sant’Angelo bridges or smaller canals in any part of town–the “acqua alta,” or high waters as it is called by locals here in Venice Italy!
  5. Explore different restaurants nearby with delicious Venetian cuisine - make sure you try their pizza, pasta dishes and seafood dishes too!
