Visit Shimane Prefecture

Shimane Prefecture is located in the western part of Japan. It is one of the least-populated prefectures in the country, with a population just over 700,000 people. Shimane boasts plenty of natural attractions, such as Lake Shinji and Izumo-taisha, one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan. The Izumo-taisha shrine is dedicated to the gods of marriage and fortune and attracts many tourists throughout the year.

Aside from its natural beauty, Shimane also has many historical sites to explore. The Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where silver was mined for 400 years until its closure in 1923. Visitors can tour underground tunnels that have been preserved since that time, featuring breathtaking views along with an immersive experience into Shimane's history and culture as a mining region.

Finally, no visit to Shimane would be complete without visiting Matsue Castle. Standing proudly on Lake Shinji's shoreline since 1611, this structure exemplifies classic Japanese architecture and engineering for those interested in its history or simply taking picturesque photos of its grounds!
