The Balqa Governorate is located in the northwest of Jordan and borders Syria to the west and Palestine to the east. It covers an area of 1,379 sq km across 19 municipalities. The region has a diverse landscape with deserts, hills, mountains, pastoral valleys and some agricultural land.

The capital city is Salt which is a popular tourist destination due to its well preserved sites from Roman and Islamic times as well as its traditional markets. Other interesting places in the district include Zarqa which was founded more than 500 years ago and features several Ottoman era buildings such as Shehawi Palace; Al Karak Castle which dates back to 1140 AD; Mukawa Nature Reserve which offers breathtaking views of Mt Nebo - where Moses saw his promised land; Wadi Kharrar - known for its blue water springs; Ain Al Basha Palace - the place of exile for King Hussein I of Jordan in 1920s.

A unique historical fact about Balqa Governorate is that it was once part of Transjordan Emirate established by Amir Abdullah I bin al-Hussein in 1921 after leaving Mecca under orders from British mandate authorities who later replaced him with his brother Faisal I bin al-Hussein on February 8th 1924 thus creating modern day Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
