The Mafraq Governorate is a province located in northwestern Jordan. It borders Syria to the north and Saudi Arabia to the east. The region is renowned for its natural beauty, including the Mujib Nature Reserve, which features dramatic canyon walls and blue-green waterfalls fed by the mighty Mujib River. Tourists also come to explore Shaumari Wildlife Reserve, home of some of Jordan's rarest species of birds and animals.
Mafraq has long had an important role in Jordanian history; it served as a center for trade between different peoples as early as 3000 B.C., with evidence from archaeological excavations such as the ancient city of Umm el Jimal suggesting that people have lived in Mafraq since 4000 B.C.. Visitors can also explore Qasr Al-Hallabat, one of the best-preserved Roman fortresses from this period.
