Visit Almaty Region

The Almaty Region of Kazakhstan is an area of great beauty and historic significance. This region is bordered by the Kyrgyzstan and China, and its landscape features stunning mountain ranges, lush forests and beautiful lakes. Popular tourist destinations include Charyn Canyon, a canyon with colorful rock formations; Kolsai Lakes, a set of three glacier-fed lakes surrounded by green conifers; and Big Almaty Lake, a glacial lake with an amazing view of the mountainside.

Almaty Region also has an interesting history. It was an important stop on the Silk Road for centuries as traders passed through on their way to pursue business opportunities in India or China. In the 16th century it became one of several cities that formed part of the Kazakh Khanate, before it was annexed by Russia in 1854 following the Russian conquest of Central Asia. It remained part of Russia until becoming part of Kazakhstan when it gained independence in 1991.
