Visit Kakamega County


Kakamega County is situated in western Kenya near the Ugandan border and is one of 47 counties in Kenya. It has a population of 1.6 million people, making it the fourth most populous county in the country. The region is a major agricultural producer for Kenya and has notable parks such as Shendi Nature Reserve and Lake Victoria National Reserve which are popular tourist destinations.

History buffs should visit Mumias Sugar Factory Museum to get an insight into how sugar was produced during the colonial era. Another interesting stop for tourists would be Shikomari Ruins, which are believed to be remnants of a palace or temple dating back to 500 CE.

Kakamega County has an incredible natural landscape with rainforests, lakes, waterfalls, coral reefs and swamps that make it unique among other regions in Kenya. Aside from that, its history also makes it stand out; Kakamega was ruled by three different kingdoms before becoming part of British East Africa until independence in 1964 when it became part of modern-day Kenya!
