Visit Kirinyaga County

Kirinyaga County is located in the former Central Province of Kenya. It lies to the east of Mount Kenya and borders Embu County to the north, Meru County to the north-east, Machakos County and Kiambu Counties to its west. The county's capital, Kutus, is a bustling town known for its fresh produce market that takes place every Wednesday.

Kirinyaga has numerous attractions for visitors including magnificent views of Mount Kenya from Karatina Town and breathtaking waterfalls at Kiandutu Forest Reserve. Tourists can also take part in activities like hiking on nearby peaks or admire Ngariama Dam which was built by Mau Mau freedom fighters during colonial times as part of their war effort against the British settlers.

The history of Kirinyaga dates back centuries when it was ruled by local chieftains and later became a significant centre for trade between the Maasai people and coastal merchants doing business with countries such as India. True to this historical background, it's possible today to visit a few ancient sites such as Thiba Ruins near Kerugoya Town that are believed to be over 800 years old or Mwea Settlements near Gatundia Market which date back over 200 years ago when traders roamed through this region exchanging goods with locals.
