Visit Tana River County


Tana River County is a region located in the southeast of Kenya along the Indian Ocean. It neighbours Garissa, Kilifi and Lamu counties. The climate of Tana River County is semi-arid with an average annual temperature of 24 degrees Celsius.

The Tana River runs through the county for over 500 km making it one of Kenya's longest rivers. There are many national parks and game reserves in the county including Kora National Park, Dodori National Reserve and Faza Island Sanctuary which makes it a great tourist destination for sightseeing as well as exploring wildlife.

One interesting place to visit in Tana River County is Bura Irrigation Scheme which has been running since 1992 when it was first opened by former President Moi and features irrigated crops such as maize, sesame, sorghum and more that are sold to locals throughout Kenya's coastal region.

Another interesting place to visit is Garsen Hill where you can find ancient artifacts that date back thousands of years ago such as stone tools used by hunter-gatherers during their migrations across East Africa. One interesting historical fact about this area is that Portuguese explorers visited here during their travels looking for spices in the 16th century.
