Visit Turkana County


Turkana County is a region in the far north of Kenya, bordering Ethiopia and South Sudan. It is the largest county in Kenya, comprising over 70,000 square kilometers of land. Its terrain is mostly desert and semi-arid savanna plains with scattered mountains located along the border with Ethiopia. The Turkana people are an ethnic group that inhabit this area and have traditionally been nomadic pastoralists but are now increasingly working in tourism.

The main tourist attractions to visit include Lake Turkana, which is one of the world's largest permanent desert lakes; it has abundant aquatic life including over 350 species of fish and a great variety of birds. There are also many archaeological sites near Lake Turkana such as Koobi Fora where fossils from pre-historic humans were discovered dating back 2 million years ago making it one of East Africa's most important paleontological sites for early human history research. Another popular attraction is Eliye Springs Resort located on the lake's shores offering various activities such as bird watching, fishing and boat trips to explore its natural beauty.

An interesting historical fact about Turkana County dates back to 2012 when local communities discovered substantial oil reserves around Lokichar in northern Kenya making it a major oil producing region today which could spur economic development opportunities for locals living there
