Visit West Pokot County


West Pokot County is a province in the northwest corner of Kenya, bordering Uganda to the west and Lake Turkana to the east. The county has an area of 11,375km2 and a population of approximately 660,000 people. It is known for its rugged terrain, dramatic landscape and beautiful wildlife such as elephants, giraffes and zebras.

Two must-visit places in West Pokot County are Kapenguria Museum and Kainuk Bridge. Kapenguria Museum houses artifacts from Kenya's colonial period along with information about local cultures. Kainuk Bridge is one of the oldest bridges on Kenyan soil, built in 1934 by Italian prisoners of war during World War I.

An interesting historical fact about West Pokot County is that it was home to many Maasai pastoralists until the early twentieth century when they were chased away by British colonial authorities because they had refused to pay taxes or attend mandatory education classes.
