Visit Line Islands

The Line Islands of Kiribati are a string of atolls located in the central Pacific Ocean. The islands span 1,150 miles and are made up of 33 small reefs, islets, and atolls. The largest island is Kiritimati, also known as Christmas Island due to its proximity to the International Date Line, making it one of the first places to see in the New Year.

The Line Islands offer some spectacular sites for tourists looking for tropical paradise. Fans of fishing and scuba diving will enjoy Fanning Island where a variety of game fish such as Marlin, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo and Tuna can be found in abundance. Birdwatchers will also find plenty to explore with over 100 species recorded on Canton Reef including Brown Boobies and Red-footed Boobies.

Kiritimati is home to an interesting historical fact - it was the site chosen by British scientists for a project known as "Operation Grapple" during which seven Atomic bombs were test detonated between 1957 and 1958. Although there has been no lasting damage from these tests visitors may still stumble across remnants from this era whilst exploring the island's coral lagoons today.
