Visit Khammouan

Khammouan is a province of Laos located in the country's central region and bordered by Vietnam to the east, Savannakhet Province to the south, and Bolikhamsai Province to the west. The region is characterized by its rugged mountains and vast forests with national parks, caves, rivers, waterfalls, hot springs and limestone karst formations.

One major tourist destination is Tham Kong Lo Cave which features an 8-kilometer long underground river passage accessible only by boat. This magical world surrounded by mesmerizing stalactites and stalagmites can be explored along with nearby Nam Nern Night Safari which offers opportunities to observe exotic wildlife at night or during early mornings from a jeep or on foot.

Another must-see sight in Khammouan province is Wat Phu Tok Temple located atop a rocky hill that requires climbing 800 steps for access. The temple houses several Buddha statues as well as various artifacts dating back more than 500 years ago making it one of the oldest temples in Laos.

An interesting historical fact about Khammouan Province is that during World War II it was heavily bombed due to its strategic location right next to Vietnam's Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).
