Visit Khammouane Province

Khammouane Province is located in central Laos and borders Vietnam to the east. It is a lush, mountainous province with picturesque valleys and rivers, as well as several national parks. The most notable of these is Phou Hin Poun National Protected Area which encompasses limestone karsts, tropical forests and caves.

The main town of Tha Khaek serves as a good base for exploring the surrounding area. Tourists can visit landmarks such as Wat Xieng Nyeun temple or take part in activities like fishing or kayaking on the Nam Theun River.

For history buffs, an interesting fact about Khammouane Province is that it was among the first regions to be inhabited by Lao people over 2000 years ago during the first Lao kingdom of Lan Xang Hom Khao (literally "million elephants under white parasol"). Today, several ancient monuments remain that bear witness to this early period of Lao history including Vat Phu Champasak which dates back to 11th century CE.
